SSC CHSL Selection Process 2026:

The selection process of the SSC CHSL exam includes the following stages.

1. Tier-I Written Exam
2. Tier-II Written Exam including the Typing Test and Computer Knowledge Test
3. Document Verification
4. Medical Examination

SSC CHSL Tier-I Exam Pattern

The Tier-I examination is an objective, multiple-choice paper that serves as the initial screening stage. The scores of candidates in this computer-based test, especially if conducted in multiple shifts, will be normalized to ensure fairness. The structure of the Tier-I exam is as follows:

• Time Duration: 60 Minutes (80 Minutes for candidates eligible for a scribe).
• Negative Marking: 0.50 marks will be deducted for each wrong answer.

SSC CHSL Tier-II Exam Pattern

Candidates who qualify in Tier-I will proceed to the Tier-II examination^{. This tier is more comprehensive and is conducted in two sessions on the same day. It is mandatory for candidates to qualify in all sections of Tier-II.}

Key Points for Tier-II:

• Tier-II consists of objective-type, multiple-choice questions, except for the Skill/Typing Test in Section-IV.
• There is a negative marking of 1 mark for each incorrect answer in Section-I, Section-II, and Section-III.
• The Computer Knowledge Test (Section-III) is mandatory but only qualifying in nature.
• The Skill Test/Typing Test (Section-IV) is also of a qualifying nature.
• The merit list will be prepared based on the overall performance in Tier-II, specifically the aggregate marks in Section-I and Section-II, provided the candidate qualifies in Sections III and IV.

Tier-I Syllabus

• English Language: This section tests basic language skills through topics like Spot the Error, Fill in the Blanks, Synonyms/Homonyms, Antonyms, Spellings/ Detecting Misspelled Words, Idioms & Phrases, One-word substitution, Improvement of Sentences, Active/Passive Voice of Verbs, Conversion into Direct/Indirect narration, Shuffling of Sentence parts, Shuffling of Sentences in a passage, Cloze Passage, and Comprehension Passage.
• General Intelligence: This includes both verbal and non-verbal reasoning. Key topics are Semantic Analogy, Symbolic operations, Symbolic/Number Analogy, Trends, Figural Analogy, Space Orientation, Semantic Classification, Venn Diagrams, Symbolic/Number Classification, Drawing inferences, Figural Classification, Punched hole/pattern-folding & unfolding, Semantic Series, Figural Pattern-folding and completion, Number Series, Embedded figures, Figural Series, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, Emotional Intelligence, Word Building, Social Intelligence, and Coding and decoding.
• Quantitative Aptitude: This section focuses on basic arithmetic skills with the following areas:
  • Number Systems: Computation of Whole Numbers, Decimals and Fractions, and the relationship between numbers.
  • Fundamental arithmetical operations: Percentages, Ratio and Proportion, Square roots, Averages, Interest (Simple and Compound), Profit and Loss, Discount, Partnership Business, Mixture and Alligation, Time and distance, and Time and work.
  • Algebra: Basic algebraic identities from School Algebra, elementary surds (simple problems), and Graphs of Linear Equations.
  • Geometry: Familiarity with elementary geometric figures, including triangles and their centers, congruence and similarity, circles and their chords, tangents, and angles.
  • Mensuration: Questions on triangles, Quadrilaterals, Regular Polygons, circles, Right Prism, Right Circular Cone, Right Circular Cylinder, Sphere, Hemispheres, and Pyramids.
  • Trigonometry: Trigonometry, trigonometric ratios, complementary angles, height and distances (simple problems), and standard identities.
  • Statistical Charts: Use of Tables and Graphs like histograms, frequency polygons, bar diagrams, and pie charts.
• General Awareness: This section aims to test the candidate’s awareness of the environment and its application to society. It includes questions on current events and matters of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspect. The test also covers India and its neighboring countries, with a focus on History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, General Policy, and scientific research.

Note for VH Candidates: For visually handicapped candidates (40% and above), the General Intelligence and Quantitative Aptitude sections will not contain any Maps, Graphs, Diagrams, or Statistical Data^.

Tier-II Syllabus

• Mathematical Abilities: The syllabus largely mirrors the Tier-I Quantitative Aptitude section, covering Number Systems, Fundamental arithmetical operations, Algebra, Geometry, Mensuration, and Trigonometry. A notable addition is Statistics and Probability, which includes the use of tables and graphs, measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode, standard deviation), and calculation of simple probabilities.
• Reasoning and General Intelligence: The syllabus is identical to the General Intelligence section of Tier-I, encompassing a wide range of verbal and non-verbal reasoning topics.
• English Language and Comprehension: This section tests vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, synonyms, antonyms, and their correct usage. It also includes comprehension skills, with questions based on two or more passages. At least one passage will be simple (based on a book or story), while another will be based on a current affairs editorial or report.
• General Awareness: The syllabus is the same as the General Awareness section of Tier-I, testing knowledge of the environment, current events, and subjects like History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, General policy, and scientific research concerning India and its neighbors.
• Computer Knowledge/Proficiency: This qualifying section includes:
  • Computer Basics: Organization of a computer, CPU, input/output devices, computer memory, memory organization, back-up devices, PORTS, Windows Explorer, and keyboard shortcuts.
  • Software: Windows Operating system and basics of Microsoft Office, including MS Word, MS Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Working with Internet and e-mails: Web browsing & searching, downloading & uploading, managing an E-mail Account, and e-Banking.
  • Basics of networking and cyber security: Networking devices and protocols, and understanding threats like hacking, viruses, worms, Trojans, and their preventive measures.
